CBR Fashion Group

The CBR Fashion Group was founded in 1980 and, with its Street One and CECIL brands, is one of the ten largest fashion businesses in Germany, with approx. 1,000 employees and a turnover of approx. €800 million.

CBR supplies a total of around 8,000 retail outlets in 18 countries, of which around 3,000 are system areas (stores, shop-in-stores, corners) and around 5,000 multilabel areas. 150,000 fashion items per day, 45 million per annum.

Thanks to the most efficient processes, latest trends represented by twelve current collections each year, 52 flash/repeat programmes for a fast reaction to unexpected trends and a 24-hour supply for particularly popular products have been implemented.


The concrete goal of CBR was to increase the efficiency and future-proofing of their IT systems. In the course of an extensive upgrade of the IT environment, the mature legacy system was being changed into a distributed architecture. This measure affected most of the business organisation.

Due to having successfully carried out projects with the same goals, Proventa AG was commissioned to develop a concept for the integration and migration and subsequently to carry out and support the following areas:

  • Concept, etl development and execution of the data migration from the legacy system to various target systems
  • Preparation of guidelines, documentation and quality assurance of process mapping in "innovator"
  • Conceptual, planning and personnel supervision of the technical-delivery management and the cutover


Over a period of approx. 2.5 years, Proventa AG implemented a method developed in house during the development process at the customer site in order to be able to carry out the data migration based on the open-source ETL tool PDI from Pentaho.

Over 90% of the processes were mapped in Innovator, a modelling guideline produced and handed over to the technical department after the end of the project.



Carrying out the data migration from a monolithic mature system to a future-oriented, modern, distributed system landscape. A four-phase process developed in house by Proventa AG was used:   


Phase I – Migration concept

The concept included the specialist demands (mapping and rules) agreed during preparation and technical demands (data format and data transport).


Phase II – Migration workflow

With the ETL tool, the relevant data-migration functionalities were developed and applied to the customer infrastructure.


Phase III – Migration test operation

The complete data to be migrated required for the test operation were made available to the relevant applications.


Phase IV – Data-migration execution in cutover

The master data required for the live operation were made available to the relevant applications. This involved the data from the source system being transferred to the target system using the workflow and in the manner agreed in the migration concept. The time of the transfer was in accordance with the initial startup planning.



Proventa supported the programme in the implementation of integration and cutover. In this process, appropriate planning had to be done at the programme level, controls carried out and organisational measures implemented.



Complete project plan with critical path, overview of the supplied items and delivery dates, necessary employees involved for the various project phases, overview of the work packages open and completed, identification and determination of different quality gates (QG) up to cutover.



Production of the overall picture and comparison with the target picture, planning and execution of workshops to achieve the target picture, identification of and planning for workarounds, preparation of the integration schedule, resource planning, dependency management, identification of the critical path.



Planning cutover time period with migration; preparation of overview of the environments (HW/SW), resources, communication and tools; production of cutover process; preparation of rollout handbook/script and checklist; identification of fault scenarios and definition of countermeasures; establishment of cutover coordination centre; cutover test; checking cutover activities for completeness, correct sequence and adherence to duration; execution.



In the course of interface and integration tests, business processes are a basic prerequisite. In a feasibility study carried out by Proventa, lack of a process landscape in the target scenario and an insufficient level of detail for the interactions (up to attribute level) were listed as risks.

Proventa were commissioned to record all necessary processes at the appropriate level of detail using interviews and to model them in the existing Innovator process-documentation system.

As part of a new system landscape, it must also be ensured that appropriate support for employees is provided by IT. Proventa prepared a concept for this purpose and supported the project implementation within IT operations and IT business services.

The support concept described how the IT support for IT applications would be structured or modified from the predecessor model on the basis of the quantities made available by the project plan.

This included the support structure (support levels and support partners), required resources, support tools to use, other relevant support information (ticket monitoring) and the information system for users (e.g., intranet, mail system, by telephone in individual cases).
